Overview
The R-1 visa classification allows foreign nationals to temporarily enter the U.S. to perform religious work as ministers, clergy members, or in traditional religious occupations for recognized non-profit religious organizations. This visa category allows religious institutions to recruit international personnel to support their ministry and community activities.
Requirements
Two years of denominational membership
The applicant must have been an active member of a recognized non-profit religious denomination for at least two years immediately preceding the petition’s filing.
A qualifying religious employer
The sponsoring U.S. organization must be a tax-exempt non-profit religious entity or an organization affiliated with a religious denomination.
A genuine religious position
The position offered must be for a minister or a traditional religious occupation requiring specialized religious training and duties directly connected to the organization’s spiritual mission.
Site inspection
USCIS requires mandatory physical site inspections of the prospective workplace prior to initial petition approval, unless specifically exempted.
